Seasonal mixed layer temperature and salt balances in the Banda Sea observed by an Argo float

چکیده

Abstract For the first time, processes controlling variations of mixed layer temperature (MLT) and salinity (MLS) in Banda Sea are quantified using data from a single Argo float combination with satellite reanalysis outputs August 2017 to 2019. This augments previous studies that utilized ocean model only. We document presence barrier quantify roles air-sea heat mass exchanges, horizontal advection, vertical entrainment seasonal variability MLT MLS. find gains losses at interface main contributor warming cooling MLT. Seasonal changes MLS driven by advection low water rather than freshwater fluxes precipitation evaporation. is particularly case during late northwest monsoon transition period February April when advected eastward Java into Sea.

Tropical cyclone footprint in the ocean mixed layer observed by Argo in the Northwest Pacific

This study systematically investigated the ocean mixed layer responses to tropical cyclone (TC) using available Argo profiles during the period of 1998–2011 in the northwest Pacific. Results reveal that isothermal layer (IL) deepening and isothermal layer (IL) cooling with evident rightward biases induced by strong TCs are clearer compared to the weak TCs. Likewise, the rightward biases of IL d...

Mixed Layer Depth Seasonality within the Coral Sea Based on Argo Data

The worldwide deployment of Argo floats has enabled much more detailed studies of global and regional seas over the last decade. Here, the seasonal variability of the mixed layer depth (MLD) within the Coral Sea was examined with CTD profiles from Argo floats. Multiple threshold values for both temperature and density have been employed to determine the most suitable threshold values for the Co...

ENSO indices from sea surface salinity observed by Aquarius and Argo

Analysis of the first 26 months of data from the Aquarius satellite confirms the existence of a sharp sea surface salinity (SSS) front along the equator in the western equatorial Pacific. Following several earlier studies, we use the longitudinal location of the 34.8-psu isohaline as an index, termed Niño-S34.8, to measure the zonal displacement of the SSS front and consequently the eastern edg...

Processes that influence sea surface temperature and ocean mixed layer depth variability in a coupled model

A 50-year coupled atmosphere-ocean model integration is used to study sea surface temperature (SST) and mixed layer depth (h), and the processes which influence them. The model consists of an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to an ocean mixed layer model in ice-free regions. The midlatitude SST variability is simulated fairly well, although the maximum variance is underestimated an...

Mixed layer lateral eddy fluxes mediated by air-sea interaction

The modulation of air-sea heat fluxes by geostrophic eddies due to the stirring of temperature at the sea surface is discussed and quantified. It is argued that the damping of eddy temperature variance by such air-sea fluxes enhances the dissipation of surface temperature fields. Depending on the timescale of damping relative to that of the eddying motions, surface eddy diffusivities can be sig...
